To improve the quality and promotion of Indonesian cocoa beans, the Indonesian Cocoa Board (ICB) has encouraged several cocoa-producing regions to apply for geographical indication certification. The main focus is on three areas: Berau in East Kalimantan, Ransiki in West Papua, and Gunung Kidul in Yogyakarta.
Berau cocoa has successfully received a geographical indication certificate from the Indonesian government. This certification highlights the uniqueness of Berau cocoa, which can only be found in the region, boosting its competitiveness in the global market. Currently, Berau cocoa is under review for geographical indication registration by the European Union, expected to open more export opportunities.
ICB hopes this certification will strengthen Indonesia’s position as one of the world’s quality cocoa producers. With geographical indication certification, cocoa beans from these regions are recognized for their unique and superior characteristics, increasing their value and sustainability in Indonesia’s cocoa industry.
In the future, ICB will continue supporting other cocoa-producing regions to obtain similar certifications to expand the global promotion of Indonesian cocoa beans.
